The Surprised Look
Some of our patients express their concern over what is often referred to as the "surprised look" during their initial brow lift consultation. This occurs only when the surgeon performing the brow lift raises the patient's brow unnatural position. The result of this is a "pulled" forehead that leaves the patient with a constant "surprised" look as their brow line is pulled above its natural anatomical position.
During your subcutaneous brow lift, Dr. O will restore your brow back to its original position. In doing so, he can create a natural looking brow line in male patients while giving the ladies a more aesthetically pleasing and delicate arch to their brow line. When performed correctly, there is minimal risk of ending up with the "surprised look" so many people worry about.
The Subcutaneous Brow Lift Procedure
During the subcutaneous brow lift procedure, Dr. O will make two fine incisions right at the hairline. After this, directed dissection will be used to elevate the brow minimizing any damage to the muscles and nerves in these areas. The incisions will then be closed with sutures and allowed to heal. Dr. O prefers to use this form of brow lift as it offers exceptional results with minimal pain, bruising, and swelling. When the brow lift is done with upper eyelid surgery, the results often restore a healthy and youthful appearance to the peri-orbital region.
If you would like to learn more about this form of brow lift surgery, Dr. Sonny O offers free initial consultations during which you can discuss the procedure, learn more about the process and recovery period, and have any other questions you might have answered.
A mommy makeover involves a number of cosmetic surgery procedures intended to restore the youthful looks of your body. These procedures can reduce the appearance of stretch marks, help with sagging breasts and skin, and help to remove extraneous layers of fat from various areas of your body. However, these procedures can be fairly involved. Here are four things you should do before your mommy makeover.
Do Your Research
The typical mommy makeover represents a significant financial investment; one that most medical insurance policies don't cover. Do your research and consult with more than one cosmetic surgeon to ensure you are going to be happy with the results. Dr. Sonny O will be happy to show you before and after photos of many of his patients.
If you haven't already given up smoking, now is the perfect time to do so. Not only is smoking bad for your general health, the nicotine in cigarette smoke can dramatically slow down the healing process. This is because nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, in other words, it makes your blood veins smaller, restricting the flow of blood that is vital to the healing process.
Fill Any Prescriptions in Advance
Talk to Dr. O about any medications and vitamins you are currently taking and any that he is going to prescribe post-surgery. He can tell you which if any of the ones you are currently taking should be stopped. Be sure to fill your prescriptions prior to the procedure so that you have everything on hand afterwards.
Have Help Ready to Go
As the typical mommy makeover consists of cosmetic surgery to several areas of your body, you are going to need a helping hand. In fact, you are not only going to need help immediately after the surgery to get home but for the next few days as your recover. The initial recovery period is going to be tough, you are going to need help with things like getting to the bathroom, remembering to take your pain meds, making sure you have plenty of food and water. Lining up help beforehand will make the recovery period far less stressful.
Among the most common signs of aging are creases, laxity, and of course wrinkles that appear in the skin. There are many causes of these wrinkles, including long-term exposure to the sun and wind, aging itself, gravity, and in some cases genetics. Dr. Sonny O and his team currently offer BOTOX® and JUVÉDERM® injectables to help reduce the severity of these wrinkles and to help restore a more youthful appearance. Both of these injectables can be used on their own or in combination with other treatments to obtain the desired results.
What Is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is an injectable that is created using a specific protein that weakens certain nerve impulses. When this protein is injected into the patient, it actually blocks specific nerve impulses that typically cause muscles in the area to contract. This allows the muscles to relax, which in turn allows the skin covering them to lie flat, smoothing out the wrinkles.
BOTOX® is considered to be a very effective form of cosmetic treatment for problems such as crow's feet, creases in the forehead, and frown lines. The injections cause minimal redness and swelling in the area immediately following treatment, but there is little if any downtime involved. It can take a couple of weeks for the full results to emerge. The treatment should last for up to four months before needing to be repeated.
What is JUVÉDERM®?
Unlike BOTOX® which is used to block nerve signals, JUVÉDERM® is actually a dermal filler that is made from hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring hydrating agent in our bodies. As you age the amount of hyaluronic acid found in your skin begins to decrease. In turn, this lack of hyaluronic acid leads to a loss of overall volume, causing a "hollowing" of the cheeks and face, leading to the formation of wrinkles in several areas.
Dr. O injects the JUVÉDERM® directly under the skin using an extremely thin needle. As it is injected, the JUVÉDERM® begins to fill in the areas of soft tissue where the loss of natural hyaluronic acid has occurred. This process restores the volume and in doing so reduces wrinkles and fine lines creating a smoother and more youthful appearance. JUVÉDERM® works best for the cheeks, chin, and lips. There may be a little redness and swelling following the procedure, but there is little to no downtime and results can last for 6 to 12 months depending on the location.

Dr. Sonny O and his team have been using intense pulsed light to help women restore that youthful look to their skin for a number of years. Intense pulsed light or IPL is typically used to help reduce redness, brown spots, broken blood vessels, rosacea, and age spots from the skin. IPL makes use of a device designed to use a wide range of light wavelengths to help reduce these effects on the face, hands, chest, and neck. It is considered to be an ultra-safe non-invasive form of treatment that can be customized to each patient's needs.
Is Intense Pulsed Light Painful?
One of the first questions most of our patients ask regarding IPL is whether or not the treatment is painful. During the treatment process, you will feel a certain amount of stinging similar to being snapped with a rubber band. To help ease this pain we may give you an anesthetic cream to apply to the area to be treated approximately 30 to 60 minutes before your treatment is to begin.
How Is Intense Pulsed Light Treatment Performed?
Before treatment, the area to be treated will be thoroughly cleaned and a cool gel is applied. You will be given a pair of dark glasses to wear. These are designed to protect your eyes from the light. Once you are comfortable the IPL hand piece will be applied to the area to be treated and the light pulses will be turned on. The treatment process will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes depending on the area to be treated. The number of treatments required will vary based on the area to be treated and the severity of the problem. Typically, it will take 3 to 6 treatments with one month between each.
After the IPL Treatment
Most of our patients experience a redness in the treated areas for a few days and in some instances, some pinpoint bruising. If you are treating brown spots, they may actually become darker at first before the skin begins to pull off. While we would all like to think we can stop the aging process, most of our patients come back to us once or twice each year for a maintenance treatment.
In recent years a new form of minimally invasive therapy called SculpSure™ has been finding its way into the offices of many plastic surgeons including Dr. Sonny O. Unlike many other forms of fat reduction such as liposuction, SculpSure™ is completely non-invasive yet provides permanent results. This form of fat reduction is fully dependent on powerful lasers contained within the machinery.
Fat Cells Are Damaged by the Lasers
The targeted fat cells under the skin are actually damaged by the lasers, without causing any damage to the surface of the skin. In most cases the patient will have little or no redness or swelling in the area by the time they leave the office. Bear in mind there are possible side effects which may include but not be limited to bruising, nerve pain, and swelling (similar to those experienced in CoolSculpting™ and liposuction).
An Area of Controlled Injury
SculpSure™ lasers cause a controlled area of injury within the fat cells. These injured or damaged fat cells are then removed from your body by its natural cellular repair system. However, this is not an action created by your body's immune system, rather it is simply the activation of certain cells in your body that are designed to remove any damaged tissue.
After your treatment, you may experience a small amount of tenderness and firmness in the treated area. These side effects should last no longer than a week in most patients. However, there is no reason you should not be able to resume your normal daily activities immediately following your treatment.
The good news is that a single SculpSure™ treatment can result in a reduction of approximately 24-25 percent in the amount of fat in the treated area after only one treatment. The prognosis is for a long-term reduction in your levels of fat as the process permanently removes the damaged fat cells. Bear in mind that SculpSure™ is intended as a spot treatment for stubborn fat cells and is not intended for use in those who are significantly overweight or looking for whole body fat loss solution. In fact, SculpSure™ is recommended for those who are interested in losing 20 pounds or less.
