Breast augmentation surgery is designed to help improve the appearance of your breasts and boost your body image and satisfaction. An important part of this process is deciding the size and shape of breasts you want as well as what type of implants will best meet your expectations. There are 3 basic types of implants available for cosmetic breast augmentation. Two of these, saline and silicone breast augmentation have been around for a number of years. New cohesive gel silicone implants, also popularly known as gummy bear implants, have only recently been approved by the FDA in 2012. Each type of implant has its advantages, and it will be up to your doctor and you to decide which implant best suits your needs.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants were developed as a response to safety issues surrounding silicone implants. If the implants rupture, saline is simply absorbed into the body. These implants are the least expensive and are FDA approved for women over 18 years of age. They come in a number of different sizes and shapes, and are available in both a high and low profile. Saline implants are put in place by the doctor and then are filled with a saline solution.
Silicone implants were the first to make it into the mainstream and were first used in the early 1960’s. Silicone breast augmentation has changed over the years due to concerns over its safety, and now these implants are made with a thicker shell that protects against leakage. These days, the risk of rupture is quite low, however it does increase slightly as the implants age. Silicone does offers a much more natural appearance than saline which accounts for their popularity. Silicone implants are approved for patients age 22 and over.
Cohesive Gel Silicone Implants
Also called gummy bear implants because of the thickness of the gel inside the shell, these are the newest implants available to those seeking silicone breast augmentation. These implants are still silicone, but they have a thicker gel that has a number of different benefits. The gel is less likely to leak, it tends to hold its shape longer, and offers a natural appearance. The cohesive gel silicone is also less likely to cause problems if it does leak, by lowering the changes of capsular contracture, or immune response. These new gel silicone implants are also available for patients 22 years and older.
Any surgery, even plastic surgery, is invasive and your ability to recover and heal will depend in part on how well you prepare ahead of time. You should begin to prepare for plastic surgery procedures as soon as 3 weeks before your scheduled surgery, and the sooner you start, the faster your body will heal. Many people mistakenly assume that because it is elective surgery that you will not need any help or need to prepare in any way. It will be up to you to clear this misunderstanding up with family and work beforehand and keep in mind for yourself that the body will need time to heal.
Ensuring You Are Healthy before Your Plastic Surgery Procedures
The doctor will make sure that you are generally healthy before your procedure and this is an important part of the process you should not try to skip. It is important not only to make sure your body can handle the stress of surgery, but also to make sure that plastic surgery procedures can heal clean and quickly for the maximum benefit.
In addition to tests ordered by the doctor, you will also want to make sure that you do not smoke or drink before surgery. If you smoke, you will want to quit several weeks in advance of the procedure. Smoking and drinking can both affect the healing process, and drinking prior to surgery can affect your immune system making you more prone to infection. Make sure that if you take medications that you let the doctor know, he can tell you which medications might cause a problem.
Two Weeks before Plastic Surgery Procedures
It is essential that you eat a balanced diet at this point and if the doctor suggests any supplements make sure you take those as well. These vitamins can help to speed healing and minimize any bruising you might have. Important nutrients to make sure you are getting enough of include vitamin A, C, and zinc, copper and selenium, these vitamins and minerals will aid in wound healing and help to build the immune system. Make sure you eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein.
Immediately Prior to Surgery
Make sure to plan for the level of surgery you will be having, tummy tucks for instance may require you prepare your home in advance, by having extra food and other items in the house. Ask family and friends to help out and to check on you if you live alone. Make sure you get adequate sleep, and finally follow the doctor’s pre-op instructions carefully.
Loose and sagging skin can rob a woman of her self-confidence. Fight back using these 3 natural methods!
What to do if this isn’t enough?
These natural steps are a good starting point, but what if its not enough? Like so many things in life, there is no easy cure for loose or sagging skin on the neck or face. Women who are ready to look and feel their best should consider consulting with a Doctor they trust. Ranella Hirsch M.D., the spokesperson for the American Society of Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery supports this point of view, “Tightening sagging skin requires more intervention than any other problem” – and there are many options available today that can provide great results. “Over the years, we have worked with thousands of women who were not seeing the results they wanted from creams and cosmetics – at some point, topical treatments cannot effectively address excess skin, there is no easy way around it!”, says Dr Sonny O, M.D. “In our Charleston office we have a number of minimally invasive technologies and approaches that put the individual in charge of the specific course of action to help them look and feel their best.”
Taking the Next Step
If you have exhausted the natural methods to fight loose skin, working with a trusted Physician is the next step for getting serious about addressing sagging skin on the face and neck. “It is important that you meet with a Doctor you trust,” adds Dr. Sonny O, “We have helped so many women meet their individual goals and improve their appearance, and it has all started with an informational consultation. I would highly recommend that anyone who is curious about what else they could be doing request more information.”
